Church Custodian Position

January 31, 2021 –

Carrollton First UMC is seeking to fill a Custodian position. Responsibilities include:

  • Cleaning of the entire church, including windows, bathrooms, elevator and garbage removal. 
  • Preparing and restoring the church before and after church services, special occasions (weddings, funerals, etc.), including arrangements of tables and chairs.  
  • Replacing light bulbs, reporting breakdowns and damages, and recommending needed supply replenishments.

General Overview: 

  • Cleaning of the entire church, including windows, bathrooms, elevator and garbage removal. 
  • Preparing and restoring the church before and after church services, special occasions (weddings, funerals, etc.), including arrangements of tables and chairs. 
  • Replacing light bulbs, reporting breakdowns and damages, and recommending needed supply replenishments. 

Accountability: General supervision is provided by the Staff Parish Relations Committee, in consultation with the Lead Pastor and the Trustees. Normal day-to-day supervision is provided by the Lead Pastor. 

Specific Functions: Cleaning of the church, including windows, bathrooms, and trash/garbage removal. 

  1. Dust coat racks and all items in hallways and remove cob webs especially over the doors and hinges weekly. 
  2. Dust railing around the stairs, pews, the window on the altar, pulpit area, etc. 
  3. Dust the organ, the piano, and the keyboard. 
  4. Dust wall accessories and all items in the Sunday School rooms. 
  5. Dust all items in the offices (except the desks-do not touch). 
  6. Empty trash in offices. 
  7. Vacuum Sanctuary, balcony, the storage rooms off the altar, the hallway, the carpeted Sunday School rooms, the furniture in the Sunday School rooms, rugs in The Gathering Place and the Multi-purpose Room and the offices.  
  8. Vacuum the pews and along the edges of the pews and the walls. 
  9. Twice a year wash the pews, windows, altar, and pulpit area, etc. or additional as needed.  
  10. Sweep the lower hallway. Mop weekly or mop as needed in bad weather. 
  11. Scrub the steps leading downstairs.  
  12. Sweep the choir room and the choir seating area in sanctuary. 
  13. Wash the floor in the choir seating area. 
  14. Strip and wax the floors at least once a year or as needed.
  15. Restrooms should be kept clean at all times. Clean & mop floor at least weekly. Remove trash daily or when needed. Keep towels, tissues, soap dispenser, and toilet tissue filled at all times.
  16. Wash all of the windows (inside and outside) when needed. Scrape off all scotch tape residue
  17. Wash the entrance section’s windows and the doors weekly (inside and outside including the removal of all tape) taking into consideration extreme weather conditions.
  18. Clean the nursery weekly or as needed. 
  19. The kitchen must be swept once a week with the garbage removed when the kitchen has been used. Mop floor after use.
  20. Keep all Sunday School rooms cleaned weekly unless the room is used daily, then clean nightly. This includes dusting, keeping doors cleaned, and scrubbing the floors. 
  21. All tables in Sunday School rooms must be washed weekly. 
  22. Vacuum Fellowship hall (when there is a scheduled special event this room needs cleaned before and after), and the rooms adjacent to the Fellowship hall. 
  23. Wash the tables which are set out in the Fellowship hall, Sunday School rooms, and rooms adjacent to the Fellowship hall. 
  24. Clean the large double doors at the bottom of the steps by the Third Street entrance.
  25. Sweep the entrance way off the parking lot as needed. Keep all leaves out of the entrance and hallway. 
  26. Keep trash and debris picked up from parking lots and grounds. 
  27. Spreading salt near doors/sidewalks/ramp for last minute snow on Sunday Morning. 
  28. Keeping the elevator clean and orderly 

Preparing and restoring the church before and after church services, and special occasions (weddings, funerals, etc.), including arrangements of tables and chairs.

  • Prepare the church for morning services. Check the temperature. This includes any special services or events. If a conflict arises contact the designated representative from Trustees.
  • Remove the extra bulletins, and straighten up and distribute the books evenly in the sanctuary area. 
  • Set up for special occasions such as …Methodist Men, Funerals, etc. Clean before and after each event. 
  • The custodian shall be responsible for cleaning the total area used by any group. They are also responsible for checking the exterior church (both inside and outside) for cleanliness. 
  • Check thermostats as needed

Maintenance checks of all utilities, equipment, replacing light bulbs, reporting breakdowns and damages, and recommending repairs and supply replenishments

  • The custodian is to see that the building is properly maintained and shall report to the Trustees all maintenance work required.
  • Immediately report any boiler problems to trustees. 
  • Check plumbing weekly (toilets, sinks, drinking faucets) – refer to trustees. 
  • The custodian shall be responsible for notifying the church secretary of the necessary cleaning supplies, room supplies, and paper products so that those supplies can be ordered as needed. Equipment needs shall be discussed with the Trustees or SPRC liaison. 
  • All custodial supplies will be handled according to current safety regulations. 
  • Cleaning supplies and equipment shall be put away at the end of each day. 
  • The furnace room shall be maintained in a clean and orderly manner, and no flammable materials are to be stored there. The custodian’s room and all storage areas shall be kept in the same manner. If there is a need for further storage, the chairperson of the Trustees shall be notified. 
  • Empty the dehumidifiers as needed in cooperation with Chair of Trustees.

Qualifications for Job

  • Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, etc. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds. 
  • Must be able to set-up and tear down tables and chairs. 
  • Available for special events as needed. 
  • Must pass background check. 
  • Must complete child-protection policy.
